Bryce Blames It On The Guacamole
Our avocado journey started way back in the early 1980s when Keith and Marie Matuschka planted their new orchard “Mavis Brae” growing kiwifruit and avocados. They invited their 20-year-old son Bryce to help. How could he say no?
For most of the next decade, Bryce balanced life as a share milker with assisting on the orchard. His mother soon presented him with his own Mavis Brae picking apron and he has prized that apron ever since, still using it today.
Bryce has fond memories of those early days and the many times the family would relax together around big luxurious bowls of guacamole.
1994
Bryce believes those experiences were what sparked him to plant his own avocado orchard at Pyes Pa in 1994. He established and worked that orchard with his then-wife and two sons. Good friends would roll up to lend a hand with the harvesting and Bryce would express his thanks with his trademark currency; cardboard boxes of avos.
2023
Fast forward to 2023 and Bryce now owns three orchards, Pye’s Pa, and two more the in the Coromandel. Over 50 hectares in total, most of which he built from scratch. Bryce’s modesty calls that a decent size – equivalent in area to 69 Eden Park pitches!
With those orchards, all excitingly approaching near-peak production Bryce was looking for new ways to share his impressive crop and pay his mortgage. He found inspiration in what had always come naturally to him, his familiar trade mark, those cardboard boxes of delicious avocados packed with heart.
So he launched Avo Post. The rest it seems is a bright green future. Great avocado-based recipes are many, yet Bryce expects he’ll still keep a special place for bowls of guacamole shared in good company!
